The problem with much of the country is that we regard driving as a basic right on a par with the Bill of Rights. Many people view taking away their cars as tantamount to taking away their livelihoods, so that society is loathe to do it.

Well, given how terrible or nonexistent public transportation tends to be in the US, and how spread out cities  are , it often is.

I didnt want him dead. but he clearly learned nothing. arrested now sure, but after that he’ll be out and still doing it. perhaps worse so, now he’s mad about how being arrested for his driving.

I wanted to see him t-boned running a red light. no one dies, but everyone learns a painful lesson

Yes, it can be. People who lose their licenses may have to do incredible gymnastics to get to work or even change jobs. That’s probably why you hear of  so many people driving without valid licenses.  However, if it comes to that point for a person, well he made his choices.  He can’t be allowed to go on endangering others.

As much as I want to call driving a privilege, I can’t deny  that you NEED a car to survive in America if you don’t live in a major city with public transit.

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > Future Heap Owner
06/26/2018 at 17:53

Kinja'd!!!0

Or at least raise the driving age, although I don’t know the statistics that would support my belief that that would decrease accidents. But that won’t happen either. Kids have so many activities and/or jobs by the time they reach 16 that parents are aching to give them a set of keys so they can drive themselves. And at any rate, that wouldn’t sto p the assholes who just drive dangerously at any age.

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > marshknute
06/26/2018 at 17:59

Kinja'd!!!0

It can be very difficult, yes, and you may simply not be able to take some jobs while living in certain areas. However, even in a city like Dallas, there is public transit that you can make work (most times) , even if you have to work hard to do it. It’s the fault of our city planners (or lack of planning?). I had neighbors in my college dorm from NYC who didn’t have drivers licenses because they never had a need to get one, even though that’s a huge city. It can be done, but it’s not easy doing it retroactively like Dallas is trying to do.

Kinja'd!!! bubblestheturtle > Chariotoflove
06/26/2018 at 18:36

Kinja'd!!!1

Agreed, but it usually does take away their livelihood . The US doesn’t do public transport, so those people would have little ability to get to work. I hear it a bunch in my area with people that can’t afford to fix their car and the craptastic bus system doesn’t go from where they are to where they have a job. Obviously some cities are better than others, but most suck at public transport.

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > bubblestheturtle
06/26/2018 at 18:48

Kinja'd!!!0

I wouldn’t say “ usually”. Go to NYC, or Chicago, or D.C., or S.F., and many other towns in between, and you’ll find people thriving on public transit. But yes,  in many cities like Dallas where I live, not having a car can severely limit your job options, or at least make it exhausting to find work arounds. Of course, none of this makes me sympathetic to the person who drives so recklessly that he ends up losing his license or at least should lose it.

Kinja'd!!! TheRealBicycleBuck > Chariotoflove
06/26/2018 at 18:53

Kinja'd!!!1

The statistics I’ve seen suggest that all raising the driving age does is shift the number of accidents to an older age group. It’s really difficult to find research on it because the majority of the work focuses on crash reduction rates for 16-17 year-old teenagers and most of those look at fatalities instead of all crashes. Masten, Foss and Marshal found that strong graduated drivers license (GDL) programs lower crash fatalities in 16-yr-olds, but increase crash fatalities for 18-yr-olds. ( https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/70c2/d4112b502c77e8580ab1d92feaaf2803f0d8.pdf )

There are others, but it’s hard to separate the wheat from the chaff on this subject.

Yes, but not mounted at the moment. I’m planning to replace the push bars with a new kit this summer. Then the pit bars will be re-mounted with new hardware. That will be after I've had them repainted in silver birch metallic.

If t he opportunity arises in a training scenario, sure. It’s on my bucket list.

Other than that, I don’t anticipate doing so unless I judge that a subject in a vehicle is in the middle of a severe felony (such as hit and run with injury) , and circumstances allow it to be done safely.

Other than that, if someone cuts into my lane unsafely, I'm just gonna brace the wheel, apply brakes oh so slowly, and let the dolt pit himself.

I hope you tell us all about your training session if you do it. There was a pursuit in LA a while ago and the department leading it (it wasn’t CHP) couldn’t PIT the guy. I’d like to know how easy it is to actually do it. I also want to know how easy it is to get out of it.

I know. While I was mainly talking about this dipshit, my comment still stands for most people that lose their license. You generally have to be a complete dipshit to lose your license. But I know many municipalities use parking fines and such as revenue streams so it leaves poor people poorer.

Kinja'd!!! NKato > His Stigness
06/26/2018 at 21:45

Kinja'd!!!0

It’s very fluid. It comes down to execution and timing. LAPD and CHP are known for being conservative with their PIT maneuvers because of potential collateral damage.

Also, many jurisdictions don't let any officer execute the pit. They have to be certified.

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > NKato
06/26/2018 at 21:54

Kinja'd!!!0

Well I know it wasn’t LAPD because the guy didn’t get shot.

CHP is conservative in general. I know they tend to cancel any pursuit that exits the freeway. But I also think it varies by division, and even then it might vary by office.

But now that CHP has switched over the Explorer they have the PIT bars, but the officers still manage to fuck those up.

This is where I kind of think France has the solution. Can’t be trusted with a license to drive a real car, but still need personal transportation to get to work and run errands, so you don’t become a deadbeat parent or other social parasite? Simple, you get to drive a speed restricted sans permis vehicle and learn to  enjoy being the one backing up traffic like an Amish buggy.

That’s actually a really good point. I wonder why nobody else thought of that. It’s a good thing people don’t have to worry about financial stability , economics, familial ties, local  friendships, job availability, etc, and can just pack up and move (without a car) at the drop of a hat.

Hey man that’s survival. That’s how it goes. Driving when you’re not safe to do so isn’t a solution to surviving.

Kinja'd!!! marshknute > Nauraushaun
06/27/2018 at 20:32

Kinja'd!!!0

There’s a huge-ass difference between being a reckless driver who disobeys the rules, and someone who’s physically incapable of driving.

Out of curiosity, what is your solution for a working-class Average Joe who loses his license because he can’t pay his parking tickets ?

He needs a car to get to work. He makes monthly car payments . So you’re telling him to keep paying for a car he can’t use, while wasting money on taxis??? Not gonna happen.

When I put myself in that man’s shoes, all I can think is that m y survival is more important than everybody else’s, so fuck the law, I’m driving on a suspended license.

People only drive on a suspended license because there’s no alternative.

Kinja'd!!! Nauraushaun > marshknute
06/27/2018 at 22:47

Kinja'd!!!0

What’s your solution to the parking ticket situation? Losing your license for that isn’t fair. But nothing good happens when you rack up fines you can’t pay. Personally, my own solution is not getting parking tickets. That way you can avoid the whole situation.

Or, if you really can’t avoid parking illegally (how ridiculous) , move somewhere that’s less strict about it. Melbourne has excellent public transport and the parking fines are virtually unenforced.

Yes there’s a difference when you’re able and capable of driving, but have lost your license for some other reason. But most places won’t take away your license if you’re a safe driver.

The only person I’ve known to drive on a suspended license was suspended because he was caught drink driving many times. The alternative is to stop drink driving.

My point is that I don’t really care how old or young you are, or how far away your job is. Though it might be inconvenient, if you can’t drive safely you shouldn’t be allowed to.
